منذ أكثر من 3 آلاف عام، رسم إنسان الكهف ما يشبه اليوميات على جدران الكهوف. يسجل أنشطته اليومية، وطقوس الصيد والعبادة. وحتى اليوم، وعلى مدار آلاف السنين، ظل الإنسان يحمل معه عاداته البدائية تلك، أينما ذهب وفي أي عصر كان.
وبمرور الزمن، استطاع البعض أن يحفروا أسماءهم خالدة في تاريخ تلك الحرفة. وربما صار الوقوف على أسمائهم، كأشهر الرسّامين في تاريخ البشرية، أمرًا غير مُختلف عليه بُحكم طبيعة أعمالهم العابرة للزمان وللقوميات والأيديولوجيات.

أوّل مَن صار اسمه خفاقا في تاريخ تلك الحرفة هو الرسّام الموسوعي الإيطالي ليوناردوا دافنشي (15 إبريل 1452 – 2 مايو 1519). دافنشي كان رساما ومهندسا ونحاتا ومعماريا ورسام خرائط ومنشورات علميّة. وهو أحد أشهر علماء عصر النهضة، ويعتبر أحد أعظم العباقرة في تاريخ البشرية ككل. وكثيرا ما وُصف باعتباره صاحب “خيال إبداعي مُنقطع النظير.”

وتعتبر لوحته الموناليزا أشهر لوحة في تاريخ البشرية على الإطلاق لا يُنافسها في تلك المرتبة لوحة أخرى. واللوحة اليوم ملك للحكومة الفرنسية. ويرفض متحف اللوفر بيعها نهائيا؛ بل وحفظها خلف لوح زجاجي مقاوم للرصاص وفي بيئة يتم التحكم بمناخها. ويُقدر سعرها، حتى عام 2016، بسبعمائة وخمسين مليون دولار أميركي. ويصل عدد زوارها إلى ستةِ ملايين زائر كل عام.
